コルカタの旅 Vol.1 ～Trip to Kolkata Vol.1～

西ベンガル州、コルカタへ行ってきました。


まずコルカタはどこにあるかというと、インドの東の端でして、
バングラディシュに隣接しています。

イギリス植民地時代には、首都が、1911年にデリーに移るまで、置かれていました。
今もイギリス植民地の名残がある建物が残り、古めかしく、趣のある街です。


私が住むムンバイからは、飛行機で3時間。成田からだと上海に行けそうな距離です。

空港に着くと、まず迎えてくれるのは黄色のタクシー。
ニューヨークと色は同じですが、
コルカタの車は、ぐんと古く、かわいらしいビートルズ。

安全のために、空港で前払いして登録したタクシーに乗ります。
運転手はもちろんベンガル語。
ムンバイ固有の言葉、マラティー語は通じません。
インドで主要なヒンディー語も、あまり通じません。


インドは地方によって、気候も違えば文化も異なり、
国ではなく、大陸だとよく言われます。
人気の神様も、ムンバイではガネーシャ、コルカタではカーリーという女性の神様と、異なります。


コルカタ市内に滞在したのはたったの1日。
コルカタならではの、人力車に乗って、散策してきました。

人力車は、自転車で引くのと、歩いて引くのがあります。
歩いて引く人力車は、
1997年からは、当時許可を持っていた人以外には許可が下りなくなったため、
今後なくなっていく運命です。

では、コルカタならではの場所を紹介していきます。


中華街
インドではコルカタだけに残る、中華街に行ってみました。

華僑の人たちは、スクーターに乗っています。便利そう。

中国語が並ぶのを見ると、東アジアを感じます。　しかし周りはインド人だらけ。

ここには、シンガポールなどで経済的に成功している
華僑の華やかな様子はありませんでした。
中国人の数は減る一方で、今ではひっそりと暮らしていました。


チャイハネ
次に向かったのは、いわゆる、チャイ屋さんです。
チャイ屋さんはインド中に溢れていますが、何がコルカタならではかというと、この器。

コルカタでは、他の地域で使っているグラスの代わりに、焼き物を使っています。
1回使ったら、地面に叩き付けて、割って捨ててしまいます。

飲み終わったら、器は割り捨てます！

もったいない・・・・。と思ってしまいますが、土に返してまた作るので問題ないとのことです。


他にも、いわゆる観光地と呼ばれる場所に行ってきました。
St. Paul Cathedral は、インドで初めて、素敵な教会だと感動しました。

写真はいまいちですが、美しい建物なんです。中も美しく、ステンドグラスが見れます。

ヴィクトリアメモリアルホールは、長蛇の列で、
中に入るのはあきらめましたが、こちらも優雅な建物でした。
セント・ポール大聖堂のすぐ近くにあります。



私がコルカタ市内にいたのは、たった1日。
他は、コルカタから電車と車を乗り継いだ、ウエストベンガルの村々を訪れました。

次回は村訪問記です。

Taking 3 hour-flight from Mumbai, I visited Kolkata, West Bengal.

Kolkata was the capital of India till 1911, when it was governed by UK.
They still keeps its antique, old city scenery.

When I arrived the airport, I first found yellow taxi.
The color is same as New York City ones, but the Kolkata ones are much older and cute Beatles!

At the airport, I took one registered taxi.
The driver can only speak Bengali. They do not speak Malati, Mumbai's native language, for sure.

India is often said that it is not a country but a continent.
The climate is different by region and so as culture.
Kolkata and Mumbai is different in language, food and the way people live.




Adding to taxi, Kolkata has its unique rickshaw, brought by people.
There are bicycle version and walk-and-pulling by hands version.

The walking version licence is not issued since 1997.
So we will not see those in some time later.

By Rickshaw, we explored Kolkata unique places.


China Town
Kolkata is the only one place to have China town in India.

Chinese people are using bike. it looks convenient. 

I saw buildings with Chinese letters. i felt East Asia!!! yet, there are Indian people only...

Here in Kolkata, I did not see gorgeous China town, which is found in other area in the world, such as Singapore, Japan, US etc.
They are living quietly and the number of Chinese people is rapidly decreasing.


Chai shop
I was truly looking for a Chai shop in Kolkata!

Chai shop is everywhere in India but Kolkata's uniqueness can be seen in the cup.

They are using potteries.
Once they use it, they crash by throwing down and break it!

The cup will again become soil and they make cup again.

Only one time use...!

I visited sightseeing places as well.
The most recommended one is St. Paul Cathedral.

It was the first time that I saw a beautiful Church in India.

Picture is not good....but it was a beautiful building. I highly recommend to go inside.
You will find stained glass.

Victoria memorial hall is next to this cathedral.
I also recommend to visit there as well.
(We were not able to go inside of the Victoria memorial hall due to looooooong ques.)

I stayed the city of Kolkata only 1 day.
On the other days, I visited island villages in West Bengal.
